The Obama administration on Friday handed House Republicans reams of documents about the controversial “Fast and Furious” gunrunning operation even as lawmakers appealed their case to seek additional records. 

After a long court case, the Department of Justice (DOJ) complied with a federal district judge's order that rejected the administration’s assertion of executive privilege over documents describing the botched operation.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), chairman of the Oversight Committee, called the records “critical" to his panel's work. 

“The committee has a duty to understand and shine light on what was happening inside DOJ during the time of this irresponsible operation. Yet DOJ has obstructed our investigative work for years,” Chaffetz said in a statement Friday. 

“The committee, however, is entitled to the full range of documents for which it brought this lawsuit,” Chaffetz added. “Accordingly, we have appealed the District Court’s ruling in order to secure those additional documents.” 

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), head of the Judiciary Committee, also called for the release of the remaining documents. 

“Given that even after years of stonewalling these are only a fraction of the documents that were subpoenaed by the House of Representatives, at this point, the usefulness remains to be seen," Grassley said in a statement. "I look forward to seeing what was actually produced, and what President Obama continues to refuse to be transparent about. It shouldn't have taken a lengthy court battle to get this far. The rest of the documents should be turned over so that the litigation can end and the American people can know the whole truth.” 

The release of documents to the House panel narrowly met the Friday afternoon deadline imposed by a January court order dismissing the Obama administration’s executive privilege argument. 

In a letter to the committee, Assistant Attorney General Peter Kadzik indicated that the Obama administration wanted to put the matter behind it. 

“[I]n light of the passage of time and other considerations, such as the department’s interests in moving past this litigation and building upon our cooperative working relationship with the committee other congressional committees, the department has decided that it is not in the executive branch’s interest to continue litigating this issue at this time,” Kadzik wrote. 

Separate from the ruling on the executive privilege claim, the committee appealed other aspects of Judge Amy Berman Jackson’s decision, which kept documents about the Fast and Furious operation under wraps for other reasons. 

Kadzik appeared to dispute the claim in his letter, saying that the material handed over by the Justice Department “fully satisfies the committee’s interest” in the issue. 

The decision to hand over documents amounts to an admission of failure for the administration, which had long insisted that many of the records were not eligible for Congress's oversight.
In 2012, House Republicans sued to obtain documents about the operation after first voting to hold then-Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt for refusing to hand them over.

The widely derided Fast and Furious program ran from 2009 to 2011 as a plan to track guns by purposely allowing them to move from low-level buyers up through Mexican drug cartels.

Many of the weapons eventually turned up in the hands of cartel members. One was at the site of a 2010 shootout that left a U.S. Border Patrol agent dead. Another was found in the hideout used by Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán before his arrest in January.

The Obama administration has received little scrutiny from the left-leaning main stream media and Operation Fast and Furious is just another example.  This gun-walking operation only came to light after Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed by one of the guns from this failed and intentionally flawed operation. This administration's stonewalling, denials and outright lies led to Obama's Attorney General Eric Holder being  held in contempt of Congress.  In Fact, Barack Obama was willing to repeat lies about the gun-walking program that armed the Mexican Sinaloa Drug Cartel, among others, with 'assault weapons' . Now this program is in the news again after the Islamic terror attack on a cartoon contest in Texas. The mention of Operation Fast and Furious always fails to address these questions. Why weren't the guns tracked;? What purpose did that really serve?  Why was the failed program covered-up and lied about ? Assailant in Garland TX Attack Bought Gun in 2010 Under Operation Fast & Furious

Five years before he was shot to death in the failed terrorist attack in Garland, Texas, Nadir Soofi walked into a suburban Phoenix gun shop to buy a 9-millimeter pistol. 

At the time, Lone Wolf Trading Co. was known among gun smugglers for selling illegal firearms. And with Soofi's history of misdemeanor drug and assault charges, there was a chance his purchase might raise red flags in the federal screening process. 

Inside the store, he fudged some facts on the form required of would-be gun buyers.
What Soofi could not have known was that Lone Wolf was at the center of a federal sting operation known as Fast and Furious, targeting Mexican drug lords and traffickers. The idea of the secret program was to allow Lone Wolf to sell illegal weapons to criminals and straw purchasers, and track the guns back to large smuggling networks and drug cartels. 

Intentions of the program were to help arm a chosen cartel and to help push gun control in the U.S. 

Instead, federal agents lost track of the weapons and the operation became a fiasco, particularly after several of the missing guns were linked to shootings in Mexico and the 2010 killing of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in Arizona. 

Soofi's attempt to buy a gun caught the attention of authorities, who slapped a seven-day hold on the transaction, according to his Feb. 24, 2010, firearms transaction record, which was reviewed by the Los Angeles Times. Then, for reasons that remain unclear, the hold was lifted after 24 hours, and Soofi got the 9-millimeter. 

As the owner of a small pizzeria, the Dallas-born Soofi, son of a Pakistani American engineer and American nurse, would not have been the primary focus of federal authorities, who back then were looking for smugglers and drug lords. 

He is now. 

In May, Soofi and his roommate, Elton Simpson, burst upon the site of a Garland cartoon convention that was offering a prize for the best depiction of the prophet Muhammad, something offensive to many Muslims. Dressed in body armor and armed with three pistols, three rifles and 1,500 rounds of ammunition, the pair wounded a security officer before they were killed by local police.

A day after the attack, the Department of Justice sent an "urgent firearms disposition request" to Lone Wolf, seeking more information about Soofi and the pistol he bought in 2010, according to a June 1 letter from Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, to U.S. Atty. Gen. Loretta Lynch. 

Though the request did not specify whether the gun was used in the Garland attack, Justice Department officials said the information was needed "to assist in a criminal investigation," according to Johnson's letter, also reviewed by The Times.

The FBI so far has refused to release any details, including serial numbers, about the weapons used in Garland by Soofi and Simpson. Senate investigators are now pressing law enforcement agencies for answers, raising the chilling possibility that a gun sold during the botched Fast and Furious operation ended up being used in a terrorist attack against Americans.

The Washington Post reports the jailbreak of drug kingpin Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman from prison in Mexico. The Mexican government and the Obama administration's connections to Guzman are nothing short of criminal. Guzman heads the Sinaloa drug cartel, the most powerful in Mexico and  it happens to control the drug trade in Chicago . This was the same drug cartel that was armed with 'assault weapons' by the ATF under Barack Obama and Eric Holder. The same administration that uses increasing gun violence in Mexico to push for more gun control in the United States.

Drug lord Chapo Guzman tunnels out of maximum-security Mexico prison

MEXICO CITY — Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the world’s most famous drug lord, has escaped from a maximum security prison in Mexico for the second time in his drug-running career, a spectacular breach of security that set off a massive manhunt in the early hours Sunday.

For the past year and a half, the leader of the Sinaloa cartel had been incarcerated inside the Altiplano, a federal facility set amid farmland west of the capital that holds the top captured drug bosses and has been described as the country’s most impenetrable prison. 

That all changed late Saturday night, when Guzman slipped out of the prison through a rectangular passage in the shower area of his cell that led to a nearly mile-long tunnel running underneath the prison, according to Mexico’s national security commissioner, Monte Alejandro Rubido.

The Associated Press video reports that this is his SECOND escape from prison in Mexico.

In a brief morning news conference, Rubido said that Guzman was last seen inside the prison around 8 p.m. while receiving his daily dose of medication. After guards realized he had disappeared, they found the hatch that led by ladder down to the tunnel, which was illuminated, perforated with PVC piping for ventilation and equipped with adapted motorcycle-on-rails to whisk the drug lord to freedom. 

The escape of Guzman is a staggering blow for Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, who had been building a strong reputation for arresting top drug bosses from all the major cartels. However, as his administration has succeeded in weakening some cartels, such as the Zetas and the Knights Templar, others are now ascendant, including the New Generation cartel in Jalisco. 

But the failure to hold the country’s most important drug trafficker reveals the weakness of Mexico’s justice system and will add to the perception that the state has become so riddled with corruption that powerful criminals can in fact exist above the law. 

The manner of Guzman’s escape suggests that his rescue operation was well-planned and financed and may have occurred with the complicity of officials inside the prison. 

But in the Sinaloa Cartel, Guzman still has a large and lucrative drug-running operation to welcome him back into the fold. 

In February 2014, Guzman was captured by a team of Mexican commandos while he was sleeping in the Miramar condominium in the beach town of Mazatlan. The arrest came after a series of military operations, which relied heavily on intelligence gathered by U.S. law enforcement officials, that led to houses with their own elaborate tunnel network in the Pacific Coast state of Sinaloa that Guzman had used to evade capture for years.

 'El Chapo'  had extensive connections inside the Mexican and United States Government. In fact, the Sinaloa Cartel was armed with 'assault weapons' by the Obama administration in Operation Fast and Furious.

The escape promises to be a major irritant in the relations between the U.S. and Mexican governments. American officials had pressed for Guzman’s extradition so that he could be prosecuted for drug crimes and held in the type of facility where he would be more secure. But Mexican officials took it as a point of pride and national sovereignty that they could hold even drug traffickers as powerful as Guzman in prison.

WASHINGTON — A high-powered rifle lost in the ATF's Fast and Furious controversy was used to kill a Mexican police chief in the state of Jalisco earlier this year, according to internal Department of Justice records, suggesting that weapons from the failed gun-tracking operation have now made it into the hands of violent drug cartels deep inside Mexico.
 

Luis Lucio Rosales Astorga, the police chief in the city of Hostotipaquillo, was shot to death Jan. 29 when gunmen intercepted his patrol car and opened fire. Also killed was one of his bodyguards. His wife and a second bodyguard were wounded.

Local authorities said eight suspects in their 20s and 30s were arrested after police seized them nearby with a cache of weapons - rifles, grenades, handguns, helmets, bulletproof vests, uniforms and special communications equipment. The area is a hot zone for rival drug gangs, with members of three cartels fighting over turf in the region.

A semi-automatic WASR rifle, the firearm that killed the chief, was traced back to the Lone Wolf Trading Company, a gun store in Glendale, Ariz. The notation on the Department of Justice trace records said the WASR was used in a "HOMICIDE � WILLFUL � KILL �PUB OFF �GUN" �ATF code for "Homicide, Willful Killing of a Public Official, Gun."

Hundreds of firearms were lost in the Fast and Furious operation. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives allowed illegal purchasers to buy the firearms at the Lone Wolf store in the Phoenix suburb and other gun shops in hopes of tracing them to Mexican cartel leaders.
The WASR used in Jalisco was purchased on Feb. 22, 2010, about three months into the Fast and Furious operation, by 26-year-old Jacob A. Montelongo of Phoenix. He later pleaded guilty to conspiracy, making false statements and smuggling goods from the United States and was sentenced to 41 months in prison.

 

Court records show Montelongo personally obtained at least 109 firearms during Fast and Furious. How the WASR ended up in the state of Jalisco, which is deep in central Mexico and includes the country's second-largest metropolis, Guadalajara, remained unclear.

After the shooting in Jalisco, local officials said some of the suspects confessed to two other shootouts in the area, including one that left seven people dead, all part of the continuing feud by rival cartel members.

The ATF declined to discuss the matter; officials said they are still compiling an inventory of all the lost firearms for a complete account of the Fast and Furious operation.

Instead of being tracked, almost all the weapons were lost as they flooded across the border into Mexico. In all, some 211 people were killed or wounded by Fast and Furious weapons in Mexico, according to Mexican authorities. And on this side of the border, a Fast and Furious weapon was found at the Arizona scene where U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was slain in 2010.

Terry's slaying set off a number of investigations in Washington into Fast and Furious. It led to the firing or demotion of many ATF officials, including the agency's acting director, who stepped down. It ultimately prompted the GOP-controlled House to vote Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over a number of Fast and Furious records sought by the House Oversight Committee.

Former head of local FBI office, in letter to Senate panel, denounced work of U.S. attorney. 

"A former director of the Minneapolis FBI office sent a letter this week to members of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee denouncing B. Todd Jones' performance as U.S. attorney in Minnesota as they prepare to consider his nomination to director of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Donald E. Oswald, 54, a self-declared Democrat and supporter of President Obama, said he felt "morally compelled" to alert the committee about what he describes as Jones' "atrocious professional reputation within the federal law enforcement community" in Minnesota.

"He was, and still remains, a significant impediment for federal law enforcement to effectively protect the citizens of Minnesota from violent gang, drug and gun activities," Oswald wrote in an eight-page, single-spaced letter.

Oswald said he decided to go public with his concerns because active law enforcement officers in Minnesota are afraid to do so. "What I hope would happen is that the Senate would subpoena some of these people to come in and talk," Oswald said in a telephone interview from his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Jones declined a request for comment Thursday.

Minnesota's U.S. senators, Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, both sit on the Judiciary Committee and said that they would review Jones' record and all information provided to it during the nomination process.
"As a former prosecutor, Sen. Klobuchar takes enforcement of violent crimes very seriously. She had a positive working relationship with Mr. Jones on these issues when she was Hennepin County attorney and knows they are important to him as well," said Brigit Helgen, her spokeswoman.
Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said in a statement that "Mr. Oswald provides some very disturbing allegations in his letter that we'll be looking into. I hope others, who Mr. Oswald mentioned, will not be intimidated to talk with us about [Jones'] leadership skills and his ability to run an agency that is in disarray."
Asked Thursday about Jones' leadership, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman gave a positive review. "My dealings with him have been first rate," he said. "He's treated us fairly."

Office decisions questioned

A number of state and federal law enforcement officers have complained privately for at least a year about the handling of drug, gun and violent crime cases by the U.S. attorney's office in Minnesota.
Oswald oversaw FBI operations in Minnesota and the Dakotas as special agent in charge of the Minneapolis Division from May 2011 through May 2012, when he retired to practice law in Florida.
In an interview in December, however, Jones characterized the complaints as a reaction to his decision to shift priorities away from street-level crimes to more complex crimes involving drug cartels and to time-consuming white-collar crimes and terrorism cases.
Oswald disputed that in his letter to the committee and included charts that he said showed "Mr. Jones' statistical accomplishments for FY 2012 are down in every category."

Jeanne Cooney, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office in Minnesota, responded with a chart that she says shows prosecutors in the office working longer hours.
"So while the number of defendants has gone down, work years have gone up substantially," she said. "Less easy cases, more harder cases."
Oswald's letter further criticizes Jones for his support of Assistant U.S. Attorney Carol Kayser, 51, the daughter of one of his mentors at the Minneapolis law firm of Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi, where Jones had been a partner, and a major financial contributor to Democratic politicians. Kayser came to the office in 2008 from the U.S. attorney's office in Atlanta.

Jones appointed Kayser as head of the violent crime and drug section after she worked in the office for less than a year, Oswald said. He said she lacked management experience and while he was running the FBI's office in Minneapolis, he received numerous complaints about her "abrasive interactions" with agents and their supervisors, who described her as antagonistic and inconsistent in her reasons for rejecting cases.
"I've come to believe that Ms. Kayser is single-handedly responsible for the disenfranchisement and destruction of relationships between the [U.S. attorney's office] and the federal agencies involved with guns and drugs," Oswald's letter says.
He said that he and his counterparts in other federal agencies complained to Jones at their monthly meetings, but Jones reacted defensively and "vehemently" defended Kayser.
Oswald concluded that Jones did so because he was close to her father, Thomas C. Kayser, 75. Campaign finance records on file with OpenSecrets.org show that Thomas Kayser and his family members have given more than $352,500 to Democrats since 1990.

Kayser and his wife, Marlene, have given more than $17,000 to Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. They gave $14,464 to Klobuchar between 2006 and 2011, and $1,000 to Franken in 2012. Carol Kayser gave $340 to Obama in 2011. "It's evident that Jones protects Ms. Kayser at all cost to ingratiate favor with others in the Democratic Party," Oswald wrote.
The U.S. attorney's office declined to make Kayser available for comment.
Thomas Kayser, a former managing partner at Robins Kaplan, said Thursday he had no knowledge of the complaints about Jones or his daughter. But he said he's known Jones for 10 years and considers him the right kind of person to run the U.S. attorney's office or the ATF.
"I've seen Todd in very difficult situations. He handles them beautifully," Kayser said.
He said his political contributions had nothing to do with Jones being appointed U.S. attorney and noted that his daughter was already working in the office when Jones was sworn in for his second stint at U.S. attorney.
Kayser said Oswald's remarks about his daughter were offensive. Kayser said his daughter was one of five people who made the final cut for a federal magistrate judge position in Atlanta. "I think that's pretty impressive. I'm very proud."
Big cases rejected?

Oswald's letter supports complaints by a number of law enforcement sources that Jones and Kayser refused to prosecute criminal operations over the past two years despite wiretap evidence and seizures of drugs, recovered firearms and large amounts of cash.
Since the FBI Safe Streets Task Force was formed about two years ago, agents and local law enforcement have brought at least 10 large conspiracy cases to the office and then had them turned down for federal prosecution, according to people with direct knowledge of those cases.
Jones said in an earlier interview that some cases were rejected for further investigation. Cooney said the task force has had problems recognized by an independent review.
At least three of the rejected cases involved widespread gang activity in St. Paul.
Oswald's letter cites one case in which starting in 2010 investigators bought more than 16 pounds of methamphetamine, recovered at least $500,000 and proved the connection to the La Familia Michoacan. The case was prosecuted in October by the Hennepin County attorney's office, and Pedro Ayala was sentenced in December to 30 years in state prison, the longest drug sentence in state history. The remaining 19 defendants are being tried by the county attorney.

The case left agents and attorneys bitter and mistrustful when Jones and Kayser reportedly defended their actions by saying investigators had originally "undersold" the case, according to Oswald and other investigators.
Cooney, at the U.S. attorney's office, said the investigators firmed up their investigation before taking it to Hennepin County. The case might well have been accepted had they referred it again for federal prosecution, she said.
Freeman acknowledged that his office has taken on some of those cases, "but I understand offices have their own priorities."
He noted that Jones made a priority of the $3.65 billion fraud case against Tom Petters and other big white-collar crime cases.

Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer announced his resignation as the head of the Justice Department’s (DOJ) criminal division on Wednesday.

Breuer had faced steady Republican calls for him to step down over his handling of a botched gun-tracking operation, but Attorney General Eric Holder lauded his top lieutenant’s performance and “unwavering commitment” to the DOJ.

“Lanny has led one of the most successful and aggressive criminal divisions in the history of the Department of Justice, accomplishing record penalties in corruption cases at home and abroad and dismantling major organized crime and healthcare fraud networks around the country while also protecting the integrity of our banking systems and fighting financial fraud,” Holder said in a statement. “Throughout his tenure, Lanny has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the mission of this Department, and I want to thank him for his dedication and exceptional service.”

The DOJ applauded Breuer’s work along the U.S.-Mexico border, saying, “the criminal division has made great strides in the fight against violent crime along the southwest border and across the country.”
Breuer has brought charges against the alleged killers of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Special Agent Jaime Zapata and those allegedly responsible for the 2010 killing of a U.S. Consular official in Mexico, along with hundreds of others involved in drug and gang warfare, according to the DOJ’s statement accompanying Breuer’s announcement.

Calls for his resignation began last Congress amid Republican investigations into Operation Fast and Furious, which failed to track nearly 2,000 weapons sold to suspected criminals in the Southwest. A weapon from the operation was found at the murder scene of a Border Patrol agent.
At the request of Attorney General Eric Holder, the DOJ’s inspector general completed a lengthy report on the operation.

The IG’s report found that four top DOJ officials — Breuer, Holder’s former Deputy Chief of Staff Monty Wilkinson, former Deputy Assistant Attorney General Jason Weinstein and former acting Deputy Attorney General Gary Grindler — should have raised concerns sooner with their superiors about flaws within Fast and Furious.
Breuer “did not authorize any of the investigative activities” in Fast and Furious, according to the report. But he was aware that a previous operation under President George W. Bush’s administration, "Wide Receiver," had used similar “gun walking” tactics, which he described as “obviously flawed,” the report stated. And yet, upon learning of Fast and Furious, the officials did not take appropriate action.
“Given the significance of this issue and the fact that [the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives] ... reports to the deputy attorney general, we believe that Breuer should have promptly informed the deputy attorney general or the attorney general about the matter in April 2010. Breuer failed to do so,” the report states.
The DOJ on Wednesday cast a wider view of Breuer’s tenure with the department, citing a plethora of successes that occurred under his watch, including the development of a program guarding against foreign corrupt officials hiding their ill-gotten spoils in the United States and increasing the enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).

Breuer’s resignation comes in the wake of a PBS "Frontline" investigation that aired last week criticizing him for not prosecuting Wall Street powerbrokers for their role in the financial crisis.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s approval rating dropped 15 percentage points from an all-time high reached last month as Republican voters balked at his pushing through one of the toughest U.S. gun laws, a poll found.
Fifty-nine percent of voters approved of the 55-year-old Democrat’s performance in a survey released today by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. Cuomo had a 74 percent approval rating in a poll on Dec. 12, two days before a gunman wielding an assault-style rifle killed 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

After the massacre, Cuomo began a successful monthlong push to tighten New York’s assault-rifle ban and reduce the number of rounds permissible in a magazine to seven from 10. The gun-control package goes too far in restricting owners’ rights, 34 percent of all voters said, including 59 percent of Republicans.
“New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had the political capital to spend when he set out to pass the toughest gun control laws in the nation,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Hamden, Connecticut school’s Polling Institute. “It is possible that the gun law cost him some of that political capital, but a 2-1 job approval rating still makes him the envy of most governors.”

New York was the first state to act on growing calls for tighter limits on firearms after the killings in Newtown’s Sandy Hook Elementary School when lawmakers approved the measure Jan. 15. Democratic lawmakers in at least 10 states along with President Barack Obama are seeking new controls, challenging the firearms lobby’s clout.
The shooter in Newtown, Adam Lanza, used a Bushmaster semiautomatic AR-15-style rifle similar to those made at a Remington Arms Co. plant in Ilion, in upstate New York. Two weeks later, two firefighters were killed in Webster, near Rochester, by a 62-year-old man also wielding a Bushmaster.
Cuomo has said the shooting in Webster lowered opposition among Republicans in the state senate who control the chamber thanks to the help of six breakaway Democrats. Cuomo’s measure outlaws the weapon used by Lanza and also allows the state to seize firearms from mentally ill people deemed to be a threat by a doctor.
Cuomo was asked during a radio interview yesterday about the likelihood of his approval rating dropping as a result of the measure. He said his own surveys of voters as he pushed the gun law showed support would likely suffer as a result.
“I know they’re going to be displeased,” Cuomo said. “I would expect that you’re going to see that in the poll. And that will be that. They will be unhappy.”

Fast and Furious back in headlines as Univision reportedly finds more victims

Spanish-language television network Univision plans to air a television special that it said reveals more violence than previously known, as well as the stories of how many more Operation Fast and Furious victims were killed, the network announced in a Friday release.

“The consequences of the controversial ‘Fast and Furious’ undercover operation put in place by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in 2009 have been deadlier than what has been made public to date,” the network said. “The exclusive, in-depth investigation by Univision News’ award-winning Investigative Unit — Univision Investiga — has found that the guns that crossed the border as part of Operation Fast and Furious caused dozens of deaths inside Mexico.”

Among other groups of Fast and Furious victim stories Univision says it will tell in the special to air Sunday evening at 7 p.m., is one about how “16 young people attending a party in a residential area of Ciudad Juárez in January of 2010″ were gunned down with weapons the Obama administration gave to drug cartel criminals through Fast and Furious.

“Univision News’ Investigative Unit was also able to identify additional guns that escaped the control of ATF agents and were used in different types of crimes throughout Mexico,” the network added. “Furthermore, some of these guns — none of which were reported by congressional investigators — were put in the hands of drug traffickers in Honduras, Puerto Rico, and Colombia. A person familiar with the recent congressional hearings called Univision’s findings ‘the holy grail’ that Congress had been searching for.”
A video preview published on Friday shows a number of the bodies of people killed with Fast and Furious weapons, as well as victims’ family members pleading with outgoing Mexican President Felipe Calderon for justice.
Congressional investigators from the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Senate Judiciary Committee have been probing Fast and Furious since early 2011, shortly after U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was murdered with Fast and Furious weapons. Terry was killed on Dec. 14, 2010, in Peck Canyon, Ariz.
Others whose murders have been connected to Fast and Furious weapons include Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent Jaime Zapata and Mexican citizen Mario Gonzalez. Gonzalez’s sister, Patricia Gonzalez, was the state prosecutor for the Mexican state of Chihuahua.
Fast and Furious was a program of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, overseen by Attorney General Eric Holder’s DOJ. It sent thousands of weapons to Mexican drug cartels via straw purchasers — people who purchased guns in the United States with the known intention of illegally trafficking them somewhere else.

The DOJ’s internal inspector general recently released a report concluding that Holder was not cleared by his currently ongoing investigation, despite a swath of media coverage saying that Holder was “exonerated” by it. Though he did conclude that he couldn’t find evidence or proof Holder knew about Fast and Furious, DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz testified before Congress that almost everyone in Holder’s inner circle at DOJ did know, and that he and his team think it’s odd at best that Holder didn’t.
“We found, as we outlined in the report, we struggle to understand how an operation of this size, of this importance, that impacted another country like it did, could not have been briefed up to the attorney general of the United States,” Horowitz said during a House oversight committee hearing. “It should have been, in our view. It was that kind of a case.”
Former White House National Security Council staffer Kevin O’Reilly — who was intimately involved in Fast and Furious planning with Phoenix ATF officials, according to emails obtained throughout the congressional investigation — has since been reassigned by the Department of State to a detail in Iraq. Obama administration officials have refused to make O’Reilly available to congressional investigators and to Horowitz’s internal DOJ investigation.
On Friday, CBS News’ Sharyl Attkisson reported that congressional Republicans are now threatening to subpoena O’Reilly and force his testimony on Fast and Furious.
Univision has aggressively covered Fast and Furious, and its most recent major run-in with the scandal came when network anchor Jorge Ramos grilled Obama in an interview on the scandal, asking him why he hasn’t “fired” Holder. During the interview, Obama made at least one false statement relating to Fast and Furious.

U.S. Attorney Looks into Mosque Denial in St. Anthony Village

"5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has learned the U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota is now looking into a permit denial for an Islamic Center.
Last week, the Village of St. Anthony denied a group of Muslims a conditional use permit to open the Islamic Center and mosque. The city council said the Islamic Center did not meet zoning requirements.
But, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS obtained an email written by U.S. Attorney for Minnesota B. Todd Jones that says he has assigned an attorney to review St. Anthony's decision to make sure it was not an act of discrimination. The Feds are interested in this case because St. Anthony's Planning Commission voted 5-1 to approve the permit. Then, just before the city council's vote, the city changed its zoning ordinance and the council then voted, 4-1, to deny the permit. We are told the Feds want to know why the Council made a last minute change in the zoning ordinance before the vote was taken.
City officials in St. Anthony declined comment because there is possible litigation with this case. The U.S. Attorney's Office confirmed they are looking into the matter but also declined to comment."

"The St. Anthony City Council has voted down a conditional use permit that would have allowed a former Medtronic building to be used for an Islamic center.Tuesday evening's 4-1 vote against the permit came after a roughly two and a half hour hearing that drew nearly 100 people, most of them against the project. 

The Abu-Huraira Islamic Center had requested a conditional use permit that would have allowed them to move into the first floor of the former Medtronic building, located off of Old Highway 8. The building is currently zoned light industrial and city code only lets places of worship exist in residential areas.

The city issued a four-month moratorium to study the zoning issue, prompting the Council on American Islamic Relations to accuse the council of intentionally slowing the process due to community opposition.
City officials say it is strictly a zoning issue because keeping the property as industrial would generate more taxes for the city.
Ahead of Tuesday's hearing, an attorney for the Islamic center said the group could file a lawsuit against the city for discrimination if the permit isn't approved.

Five Things To Know About The Republican Witchhunt Against Attorney General Holder

 In 2006, during the presidency of George W. Bush, the Justice Department launched the first of a series of misguided “gunrunning” schemes that eventually led to the death of federal Agent Brian Terry. Rather than look to ways to prevent such a tragedy from happening again, however, House Oversight Chair Darrell Issa’s (R-CA) spent his tenure as a committee chair trying unsuccessfully to embarrass Attorney General Eric Holder.
Next week, Issa plans to escalate this witchhunt by holding an committee vote on a resolution to hold the Attorney General in contempt of Congress. Here’s what you need to know about this vote:

1. Issa Has No Case: Issa’s uncovered no evidence showing Holder bears any blame for the botched operations begun under George W. Bush, even though the Justice Department turned over thousands of pages of documents concerning the operations. Instead of accepting this fact, Issa has requested many more documents containing confidential information regarding ongoing law enforcement investigations, and is now threatening to hold Holder in contempt if these documents are not turned over. Holder is entirely correct to withhold these documents, however, because Justice Department documents are not subject to congressional subpoena if they would reveal “strategies and procedures that could be used by individuals seeking to evade [DOJ's] law enforcement efforts.”
2. Reagan’s Justice Department Agreed With Holder: President Reagan’s Justice Department warned in the 1980s that the Constitution’s separation of powers prevents the kind of documents Issa is seeking from being revealed to Congress because of the risk that the legislature could “exert pressure or attempt to influence the prosecution of criminal cases.”
3. Law Enforcement Rejects Issa’s Witchhunt: Issa’s efforts to embarrass Holder are an unnecessary distraction that hinders the Department of Justice’s ability to do its real job. As an organization representing numerous senior law enforcement officials warned Issa, his efforts are “an impediment to the vigorous enforcement of violence and crime.”
4. Even Top Republicans Think Issa Goes Too Far: After Issa leaked his plans to pursue contempt charges to the media, the House Republican leadership pressured him to back off. Indeed, even House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) has indicated that Issa is overreaching.
5. Issa Is Fixated On A Conspiracy Theory: Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of this affair is what Issa once suggested his investigation will uncover. In an interview with Sean Hannity, Issa claimed that the Obama administration “made a crisis” when they continued the Bush-era gunrunning operations because they wanted to “us[e] this crisis to somehow take away or limit people’s Second Amendment rights.” This accusation originates from a former militiaman who supports violent resistance to imagined government attempts to seize his guns. And it amounts to an accusation that a series of botched gun stings that begun during the Bush Administration were actually part of a secret Obama plot to release guns to Mexican drug lords, so that those guns could then be used to kill federal agents, which would then cause a national uprising in support of gun control.

A single internal Department of Justice email could be the smoking-gun document in the Operation Fast and Furious scandal — if it turns out to contain what congressional investigators have said it does.
The document would establish that wiretap application documents show senior DOJ officials knew about and approved the gunwalking tactic in Fast and Furious. This is the opposite of what Attorney General Eric Holder and House oversight committee ranking Democratic member Rep. Elijah Cummings have claimed.
It appears that email would also prove senior DOJ officials, likely including Holder himself, knew in March 2011 that a Feb. 4, 2011 letter from the DOJ to Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley falsely denied guns were permitted to “walk” into Mexico. The DOJ allowed that false letter to stand for nine more months, only withdrawing it in December 2011.
During the June 24 broadcast of Fox News Sunday, House oversight committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa cited the email as a “good example” of a specific document his committee knows Holder is hiding from Congress.
“The ATF director, Kenneth Melson, sent an e-mail. And he had said to us in sworn testimony that, in fact, he had concerns,” Issa said. “And we want to see that e-mail because that’s an example where he was saying, if we believe his sworn testimony, that guns walked. And he said it shortly after February 4, and [on] July 4. When he told us that, we began asking for that document.”
But the details of it surfaced first when Grassley mentioned it for the first time publicly during a June 12 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing where Holder was testifying.
